Purple fish with spots on its head in Michigan's rivers?

Today I was fishing with my friends in the Chippewa River and we kept catching these fish that were sort of purple in color and had white spots or something on its head and had more of a white under belly. It's head was rounded at the top. We have no idea what kind of fish this could be do you know?
